![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Newsletter - Issue 7Welcome to the 7th Edition of the MRS Web Solutions Newsletter, your semi regular update on the wonderful world of the internet and all things MRS.
![]() Intro![]() So whats been happening out there in the Web V2.0! You probably didn't even realise but 1000's of sites last month went all pink for 31 days to support Breast Cancer Research. Some big ones like Yahoo even took part to help raise awareness of the charity. So what with naked day in August and now this for October, will we see this being taken up more and more in the future? Do you want to take part? In more serious news, is it the death of the internet and the birth of a new balkanised net? China and some Arabic countries are fed up of using our Latin internet and seek the ability to set up there own naming policies. Not that someone like China needs to ask really. Sounds simple but the interent is largely based on the use of latin characters for everything from IP's to HTML coding. Will we see the internet as large un-connected islands of information or will we be fully inter-connected? Well history would force a no answer to that question and what with censorship as it is all over the world has it ever been a fully un-edited source of information? Helvetica - the big 50![]() Helvetica is so widely used in signs, television news identities, and names of numerous consumer products as to sometimes appear generic. The logos of companies like 3M, AGFA, BASF, American Airlines, BMW, Crate & Barrel, Hoover, Lufthansa, Fendi, Knoll, Intel, Motorola, Muji, Nestle, Panasonic, Parmalat, SAAB (Helvetica 83 Heavy Extended), Samsung, Staples, Target, Texaco, and hundreds of other major corporations use Helvetica. Next year Helvetica will be 50 years old and in line with this is the release of Gary Hustwit's documentary on Helvetica, called simply Helvetica. This will delve not only into the famous typeface but all aspects of typography and how it effects our daily life and choices behind it. Design to most people is colour and layout, not typography. But in reality, and especially with Web design and print in the commerical zone, typography can be the most important aspect.
