Newsletter - Issue 6

2006 is well upon us now and the outlook is sunny. The tax year has begun and for many so has the new year.

Web accessibility and standards have taken another leap forward and so has MRS.

Oh and April 5th was the first ever naked day!

Issue 6

Annual Naked Day

Annual Naked Day

NO! Stop, put your clothes back on. Not only was it on April 5th but its meant to be for websites! phew that was a close one.

Yes its official, the websites are going all naturist on us. Well do you blame them? It must get pretty boring out there in cyber space.

I know, you don't get it. Well I'll explain. All modern, well designed and standards compliant websites should be styled completely by an external file called a CSS (cascading style sheet). The CSS controls all the colours, images and layout of the site.

Annual Naked challenges website owners to turn off their stylesheets which will, in short, make your site naked. Black text on a white background.

If your site can achieve this it means your site is 'so web 2.0 darling (i'll explain later)' meaning its compliant, future proof and accessible but everyone and everything.

So do you want a website which can go naked? Chances are you already have one if we designed it in the last 2 years but if not get in touch. All our designs are fully charged and able to strut there stuff in the buff.

Accessibility Guidelines

Accessiblity

New guidelines on how to make websites more user-friendly for disabled people have been developed by the British Standards Institution (BSI).

The work was sponsored by the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) after an investigation in April 2004.

The DRC's report into web accessibility found that more than 80% of sites posed barriers to disabled people.

The DRC also points out that businesses with accessible websites are in a much better position to tap into the estimated £80bn spent by people with disabilities every year.

"We need to ensure more websites can be used by disabled people," said DRC chairman, Bert Massive.

At MRS we are proud to say and confident that our sites are already exceeding the guidelines.

Web 2.0

Web 2.0

Web 2.0 generally refers to a second generation of services available on the World Wide Web that lets people collaborate, and share information online. In contrast to the first generation, Web 2.0 gives users an experience closer to desktop applications than the traditional static Web pages.

They often allow for mass publishing (web-based social software). The term may include blogs and wikis. To some extent Web 2.0 is a buzzword, incorporating whatever is newly popular on the Web (such as tags and podcasts), and its meaning is still in flux.

Web 2.0 potentially can be the end of huge companies like microsoft as free to use online word processors and graphic programs eliminating the need for any software other than your trusty browser.

Corporate Identity

Web 2.0

One word. Essential. There are so many companies out there you need to have an image which is original and easily identifiable. Just like the chaps on the left.

You also need the image to run consistently throughout all your business media, from your website down to your compliment slips.

Naturally we can do all of this. We have built up a strong and fresh reputation with clients with regards to creating identity and creating their business media. In house we can create anything from CD's to business cards, letterheads to presentations, all wrapped up in your own personal identity.

Get in touch for a series of packages we have which can cover your basic media needs or, if need be, lets have a chat and get down to some serious be-spoke creations.

Multi-threaded Email

Email

Online email marketing is a powerful, cheap and effective tool for capturing your audiences attention.

From your website you can gather users emails through a registration process. You can then send emails from your site which can be styled with your own personalised email template. Emails are organised into groups which you create and organise all from your browser.

Multi-threading allows each email to be personalised to that particular recipient. So your emails seem like they are going to that person not to a mailing list.

New Sites

New Sites

Its All Local

This is a community based site covering the Fleet, Farnborough, Camberley and Aldershot area.

Users can search through a list of advertisements covering everything from Property to Motors. Local community information and events in the area are also available.

Users can also add their own adverts which is the main attribution of the site.

Keith Michaels

MRS were given the opportunity to re-design and re-think the Keith Michaels website.

The new site is designed with search engines and search engine placement in mind and all content is highly optimised.

Insurance quotations can be done online via a complex online application form which stores entries on a database for use by the companies employees.

Capital Events

Capital Events came to us with the task of revamping what was a powerpoint presentation into something more interactive and smooth.

The solution was a Flash booklet where users can flip pages and view what Capital Events are all about.

The book is used at presentations, available on the website and also given to clients as a standalone CD-Rom.
